Specialist Day Services

Our specialist day services in Farnborough, Hampshire and Camberley, Surrey offer skilled, person-centred support for adults with profound and multiple learning disabilities (PMLD) and complex needs, enabling each person to achieve personal outcomes, promote wellbeing and participate in meaningful activities.

For people with complex physical, learning and communication needs including those with profound and multiple learning disabilities (PMLD)

Our services support individuals with profound physical disabilities, learning disabilities, and other related challenges, such as sensory impairments and epilepsy. Many of our students use wheelchairs and have limited or no speech but can communicate in other ways.

Our day services provide essential care through a team of skilled, compassionate staff. Students have access to specialised equipment, dedicated spaces, and transportation to help them participate in daily activities. Our team’s high level of training and commitment ensures that every student is treated with respect and receives personalised support, whether it’s one-on-one or in small groups.

A Safe Environment Tailored to Each Person’s Needs

We offer a safe and supportive environment with care tailored to each individual’s needs. This includes not just physical care, but also emotional and psychological support to help students thrive. Our staff are trained to use a range of communication techniques and assist with postural care, ensuring students are comfortable and well-supported throughout the day.

Students also have access to both high-tech and low-tech devices, including eye-controlled technology, interactive screens, and sensory spaces, to enhance their ability to communicate and engage with their environment. A qualified music therapist helps students overcome communication and emotional challenges, offering an additional way for them to express themselves. Our Health and Wellbeing Officer ensures that students are able to access the NHS community teams and further essential services and support to meet their health and wellbeing needs.

Knowledge and Understanding

A variety of activities – such as cooking, gardening, art, and music – are designed to help students develop independence and make the most of their abilities. We also have equipment to support safe positioning, ensuring students are not confined to their wheelchairs for extended periods.

Our accessible minibuses, equipped with wheelchair lifts and ramps, ensure safe and easy transportation for students, further promoting their mobility and inclusion.

Founded in 1991 by parents and professionals who identified a gap in services for young people with complex disabilities, Parity for Disability has grown over the years to meet the evolving needs of our students. In recognition of our work, we received the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service in 2019.

Stories

Lucy’s Journey to Happiness and Confidence

Lucy, 54, has lived with a local family through the Shared Lives program since 1999, receiving the care and support she needs for her multiple disabilities. Before joining the Parity for Disability’s Mytchett day service in 2017, Lucy struggled with a lack of support, causing her to become unhappy and isolated. Her previous day service, based in a room in a community building, with no adapted facilities, lacked consistent relationships and offered activities that were physically challenging for her, which led to concerns about her safety and dignity.

Lucy’s main carer, Gillian, reached out to Lucy’s Care Manager, and together they decided to move her to Parity’s Mytchett service. There, Lucy was gradually introduced to a more personalized environment where she could engage in activities that suited her needs and interests. Unlike her previous service, she wasn’t forced into uncomfortable situations. Instead, short, tailored trips and social activities were introduced to build her confidence.

Lucy quickly adapted to the supportive and friendly atmosphere at Mytchett. She now participates in a wide range of activities, from shopping trips where she practices independence by pushing the trolley, to creative tasks like art and memory games. With encouragement from the team, Lucy has developed new skills, such as drawing, cooking, and using apps to work on her cognitive abilities.

Her social life has flourished too. Lucy has made close friends with fellow students, and she’s shown a nurturing side, often helping others, especially a physically fragile student she’s become particularly close to. These connections have also helped Lucy overcome past anxieties, even returning to activities she previously avoided, like visiting garden centres.

Lucy’s consultant has seen a remarkable change in Lucy, noting her improved mood and increased social confidence. Gillian, her carer, adds that Lucy is now happier, more independent, and looking forward to her days at Parity, a clear sign that the support she receives there has transformed her life for the better.
Gillian, herself, is also able to take advantage of the respite time without worrying about Lucy’s wellbeing during the day.

Parity supports around 54 individuals from an area covering parts of Hampshire, Surrey and Berkshire, offering safe, welcoming and fulfilling opportunities.

We also work alongside other charities, organisations, local authorities and the NHS to raise awareness of profound and multiple disability and the adjustments that can be made to ensure they are included in their communities and everyday life.

A group of students at the Camberley day service have used their individual abilities to collaborate on reproductions of Van Gogh’s ‘Starry Night’ and Monet’s ‘Japanese Footbridge’. Led by Senior Keyworker Ian Hoole, the project involved students creating different layers of the famous paintings. Students completed 12 individual canvas squares to form the reproduction, assembling the finished artwork when all the squares were ready. The Van Gogh ‘Starry Night’ project is now displayed at Frimley Park Hospital and Monet’s ‘Japanese Footbridge’ is in the foyer of the Aldershot Centre for Health.

Whenever animals visit the day services, students and staff enjoy a pleasant time feeding them, stroking them, and watching them move round the room. They admire their features, and take plenty of selfies!

By using Parity’s minibuses and booking an accessible beach hut, students can enjoy beautiful days at Boscombe Beach.

Thanks to an invitation issued by student Nick to view his pasta Buckingham Palace in progress, we hosted a very special visit at Parity Mytchett from Her Royal Highness the Duchess of Edinburgh.
