Earlier on in the year before lockdown the art group decided to produce their own version of Van Gogh’s painting ‘Starry night’, on an ambitious scale.
We photocopied the original painting and divided it into 12. We then cut it up and enlarged each square to approximately A4 size so that students could have a square each to reproduce on a canvas. The idea being that at the end we would have 12 separate canvases that when put together would make up the whole painting.
Each student worked on a canvas according to their own skills. Ellen for instance is very good at colouring in large areas so she would do the background ready for other students to work over the top. Richard and Lisa painted in some of the finer details such as the houses and the church spire, while Stephen painted the more abstract areas using an extended paintbrush. Ian joined the group occasionally, putting some finishing touches here and there. Each student worked on their canvas independently with a small amount of help with preparation.
At the end we put all the canvases together to make up one big painting. The result is their version rather than a direct copy. The finished painting measures approx 5FT X 5FT.
